Mini-Social Phobia Inventory (Mini-SPIN)
Mini-Social Phobia Inventory (Mini-SPIN) Social Anxiety Disorder Diagnosis Print Mini-Social Phobia Inventory (Mini-SPIN) By Arlin Cuncic Arlin Cuncic, MA, is the author of Therapy in Focus: What to Expect from CBT for Social Anxiety Disorder and 7 Weeks to Reduce Anxiety. Learn about our editorial policy Arlin Cuncic Medically reviewed by Medically reviewed by Steven Gans, MD on August 05, 2016 Steven Gans, MD is board-certified in psychiatry and is an active supervisor, teacher, and mentor at Massachusetts General Hospital. Learn about our Medical Review Board Steven Gans, MD Updated on June 24, 2019 Social Anxiety Disorder Overview Symptoms & Diagnosis Causes Treatment Living With In Children Getty / Peerawat Kamklay The Mini-Social Phobia Inventory (Mini-SPIN) is a 3-item, self-rated scale originally developed to screen for generalized social anxiety disorder (SAD). The Mini-SPIN was developed by Dr. Jonathan Davidson of Duke University Medical Center, based on the longer 17-item social phobia inventory (SPIN). As professionals no longer distinguish between different types of social anxiety disorder (generalized vs. specific), this scale would be used for the assessment of social anxiety disorder of all types. Previously, the generalized subtype referred to people who experienced trouble with many social and performance situations, while the specific subtype referred to people who had trouble with only one (often public speaking). How the Mini-SPIN Is Administered The Mini-SPIN is generally used as a screening instrument for social anxiety disorder. Your doctor may use the questions on the Mini-SPIN to determine whether you are at risk for this disorder. A score on this instrument cant determine whether you meet the criteria for a diagnosis. Rather, it is the first step that your doctor might use to see whether further testing is needed. The Mini-SPIN contains three items about avoidance and fear of embarrassment that you rate based on the past week. The items are rated using a 5-point Likert scale: 0 not at all, 1 a little bit, 2 somewhat, 3 very much, and 4 extremely. Fear of embarrassment causes me to avoid doing things or speaking to people.I avoid activities in which I am the center of attention.Being embarrassed or looking stupid are among my worst fears. Scales such as this are often also used for research purposes when scientists want to determine the level of a problem in a large group or assess change over time in a particular problem. In this case, they might use the Mini-SPIN to assess for risk of social anxiety disorder or change in social anxiety symptoms over time. Generally, however, a short assessment like this is used as a screening test to tell your doctor whether to move on to ask more questions. Its important, then, that you answer as honestly as possible, even though it might feel embarrassing at the time. Information Provided by the Mini-SPIN The Mini-SPIN is scored by summing the item ratings. Scores of 6 or higher on the Mini-SPIN indicate possible problems with social anxiety. Scores this high would generally be followed up with a full diagnostic interview for SAD with a trained mental health professional. The Accuracy of the Mini-SPIN With a cutoff score of 6 or greater, the Mini-SPIN showed 90% accuracy in diagnosing the presence or absence of generalized social anxiety disorder in a managed care population. Results from a 2016 study published in the journal Cognitive Behavioral Therapy demonstrated that the Mini-SPIN had excellent ability to distinguish between people with and without social anxiety disorder in a clinical sample of individuals with other disorders. Compute Your Score Rate each of the items above from 0 to 4. Add up the three item scores to compute your total score. For example, if you answered 4 to question 1, 3 to question 2, and 4 to question 3, your total score would be 11. Next, compare your score to the cutoff score of 6. In this case, the score of 11 is well above the score of 6. When used as a screening tool, scores of 6 or higher indicate possible problems with social anxiety. A Word From Verywell If you have a score that indicates a possible problem with social anxiety or feel that your social anxiety is a hindrance, it is best to contact your doctor or a mental health professional for advice. While social anxiety can feel overwhelming, there are effective treatments that could help, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy and medication, depending on your individual circumstances.

Individual Case Report: Firm Analysis As a prospective employee of this company, this report seeks to outline Zappos, an online retailer specializing in shoes started in 1999, specifically the companyââ¬â¢s mission statement, general objectives and strategies and delves into organizational structure and company culture. The company is noteworthy for three particular reasons: 1) It is the largest online retailer of shoes in the US but is slowly expanding into other product categories, 2) the companyââ¬â¢s growth year-on-year has been astronomical and 3) Zappos top-rated customer service experience, which the company says is enabled by a deeply ingrained organizational culture standard that has resulted in the company being ranked #6 in Fortuneââ¬â¢sâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In other words, only if the item is actually physically present in the warehouse would a customer have the option to order it. In the agreement, Amazon promised that Zappoââ¬â¢s operations and governance would remain intact, independently run as if a wholly separate company. The mutual alliance was ostensibly made because the customer service-centric culture was found to be co-inspired and compatible. Another reason was likely because Amazon could help the company expand gracefully and in orderly fashion as Zappoââ¬â¢s sales to that point were largely doubling every year creating strain within the company to grow alongside their sales. Socrates Was A Greek Philosopher And The Main Source Of...
Socrates was a Greek philosopher and the main source of Western thought. He was born circa 470 BC, in Athens, Greece and also through the writings of his students, Plato and Xenophon we of his life. Socrates was the son of Sophroniscus, an Athenian sculptor and stone maker, and Phaenarete, a midwife. Because he was not from a superior family, he got a basic Greek education and learned his father s craft at a young age. Before Socrates devoted his life to philosophy, it is believed he worked as a mason for many years. Socrates married Xanthippe, a younger woman and they had three sons Lamprocles, Sophroniscus and Menexenus. Furthermore, the Athenian law required all able bodied males serve as citizen soldiers for duty from ages 18 until they were 60. According to Plato, Socrates served in the armoured infantry known as the hoplite with shield, face mask and long spear. He participated in three military campaigns during the Peloponnesian War, at Delium, and Potidaea, Amphipolis where he saved the life of Alcibiades, a popular Athenian general. A trait that stayed with him throughout his life was his courage in battle and fearlessness. After his trial, he compared his refusal to retreat from his legal troubles to a soldier s refusal to retreat from battle when threatened with death. Memory Essay Free Essays
Autobiographic memories are known to be frequently inaccurate. In fact, when a person recalls the past, the images of real events are intermingled with events that either never occurred or are distorted so severely that there is little opportunity to recognize the true happenings in them. This occurs because of the operation of certain principles of memory that render exact memories difficult and almost unrealistic. We will write a custom essay sample on Memory Essay or any similar topic only for you Order Now These principles include schemas and mechanisms of interference explaining why memories can often be inaccurate and misleading. Schemas Schemas directly affect human perception of the outer world, other people. They are even more significant in the conceptualization of what one is and what one believes oneself to be. A person operating on a schema has a distinct perception of oneââ¬â¢s own self that fits into a framework pre-specified in the schema. This framework includes a variety of attributes directly related to the life of an individual. An elderly woman could see her life as one of a devoted Christian. In such a case, she can be willing to shove away the memories that do not demonstrate such a trend in her life. Thus, she may be willing to repress memories of youthful fun that do not fit into her current beliefs and attitudes so that she could feel more comfortable about her past. This can occur not because of intended self-deception, but because of the stated schema that operates at the subconscious level. A man whose schema is that of a courageous hero will live the life based on this schema. In this case, he will tend to repress memories of his childhood episodes in which he acted as a coward or a villain, in his own current perception. Such incidents will not fit into his schema and thus are repressed as conflicting. The schema in this way governs not only what occurs in the present, but also memories of the past. Interference Interference is another powerful influence on the mechanisms of memory that makes remembrance of the past often inaccurate. It occurs because a human mind cannot store infinite amounts of information. When new information comes in, it may interfere with the older layers. Interference falls into two types: proactive interference and retroactive interference. The first kind occurs when ââ¬Å"an older memory interferes with remembering a newer memoryâ⬠(Borree, 2002). This is especially relevant to the successive study of several foreign languages when the knowledge of the previously studied language can interfere with the knowledge of the current one. Retroactive interference, in contrast, occurs when ââ¬Å"newer memories interfere with older onesâ⬠(Borree, 2002). The latter type is more relevant to the exploration of autobiographic memory inaccuracy. When the current information conflicts with older layers, it can take precedence over them. A person who has achieved high socioeconomic status in the present may inaccurately believe that his past was also more glorious than it really was. A common occurrence is to see the harsh treatment from parents as intolerable abuse when one is consistently told, for instance, in a therapy course, that he or she was the victim of abuse. Evidence shows that ââ¬Å"some of the people who remembered terrible things like being abused as children were discovered to have created these memories under pressure from their therapistsâ⬠(Borree, 2002). When people in society are continuously being told about abuse in families, they tend to see their past in the same light, inventing instances of abuse even where they were not present. This represents a case of interference where the past interferes with the present. Repression Repression is a term that was introduced by Sigmund Freud, the psychologist who invented the psychoanalysis theory. According to him, memories can be repressed if they are too painful or disagreeable to people. Humans tend to ââ¬Å"push painful memories out of our awareness and into a deep, dark place called ââ¬Å"the unconscious mindâ⬠(Borree, 2002). This mechanism, too, can explain how memories are stored in places from which they are never retrieved. This distorts the real picture of the past events. Manipulation Many people with susceptible psyche can fall prey to conscious manipulation that leads to the change in their memories post factum. A skilful person using hypnosis can put them in this state. Manipulation can be used in a less conspicuous manner ââ¬â through the use of specific language, for instance. The lawyer in court who uses the word ââ¬Å"tragedyâ⬠to describe the misfortunes of the victim will force the victim to believe that he or she has indeed been through a terrible tragedy. Conclusion Distortions of events in autobiographic memory can arise for a number of reasons. Schemas, interference, repression and manipulation are just a few mechanisms that can affect human memories. In each case, the result is the distorted perception of the past reality which is influenced by the current cognitive state of the individual. Reference Boeree, C.G. (2002). Memory. Chatterjee was working in Maintenance as a worker for three years. He was efficient. He had initiative and drive. He performed his duties in a near perfect manner. He was a man of proven technical ability with utmost drive and dash. He was promoted as Supervisor. Chattejee, now a Supervisor, was one day passing through the Maintenance Shop on his routine inspection. He found a certain worker sitting idle. He pulled him up for this. The worker retaliated by abusing him with filthy words. With a grim face and utter frustration, Chatterjee reported the matter to Mukherjee. The worker who insulted Chatterjee was a notorious character , and no supervisor dared to confront him. Mukherjee took a serious view of the incident and served a strong warning letter to the worker. Nothing very particular about Chatterjee or from him came to the knowledge of Mukherjee. Things were moving smoothly. Chatterjee was getting along well with others But after about three years, another serious incident took place. A worker came drunk to duty, began playing cards, and using very filthy language. When Chatterjee strongly objected to this, the worker got up and slapped Chatterjee. Later, the worker went to his union and reported that Chatterjee had assaulted him while he was performing his duties. Chatterjee had no idea that the situation would take such a turn. He, therefore, never bothered to report the matter to his boss or collect evidence in support of his case. The union took the case to Shukla and prevailed over him to take stern action against Chatterjee. Shukla instructed Mukherjee to demote Chatterjee to the rank of a worker. Mukherjee expressed his apprehension that in such a case Chatterjee will be of no use to the department, and. the demotion would adversely affect the morale of all sincere and efficient supervisors. But Chatterjee was demoted. Chatterjee continued working in the organisation with all his efficiency, competence, and ability for two months. Then he resigned stating that he had secured better employment elsewhere. Mukherjee was perturbed at this turn of events. While placing Chatterjees resignation letter before Shukla, he expressed deep concern at this development. Shukla called Chief of Personnel for advice on this delicate issue. The Chief of Personnel said, l think the incident should help us to appreciate the essential qualification required for a successful supervisor. An honest and hardworking man need not necessarily prove to be an effective supervisor. Something more is required for this as he has to get things done rather than do himself. ABC manufacturing The ABC Manufacturing Company is a metal working plant under the direction of a plant manager who is known as a strict disciplinarian. One day a foreman noticed Bhola, one of the workers, at the time-clock punching out two cards his own and the card of Nathu, a fellow worker. Since it was the rule of the company that each man must punch out his own card, the foreman asked Bhola to accompany him to the Personnel Director, who interpreted the incident as a direct violation of a rule and gave immediate notice of discharge to both workers. The two workers came to see the Personnel Director on the following day. Nathu claimed innocence on the ground that he had not asked for his card to be punched and did not know at the time that it was being punched. He had been offered a ride by a friend who had already punched out and who could not wait for him to go through the punch-out procedure. Nathu was worried about his wife who was ill at home and was anxious to reach home as quickly as possible. He planned to take his card to the foreman the next morning for reinstatement, a provision sometimes exercised in such cases. These circumstances were verified by Bhola. He claimed that he had punched Nathus card the same time he punched his own, not being conscious of any wrongdoing. The Personnel Director was inclined to believe the story of the two men but did not feel he could reverse the action taken. He recognized that these men were good workers and had good records prior to this incident. Nevertheless, they had violated a rule for which the penalty was immediate discharge. He also reminded them that it was the policy of the company to enforce the rules without exception. A few days later the Personnel Director, the Plant Manager, and the Sales Manager sat together at lunch. The Sales Manager reported that he was faced with the necessity of notifying one of their best customers that his order must be delayed because of the liability of one department to conform to schedule. The department in question was the one from which the two workers had been discharged. Not only had it been impossible to replace these men to date, but disgruntlement over the incident had led to significant decline in the cooperation of the other workers. The Personnel Director and the Sales Manager took the position that the discharge of these two valuable men could have been avoided if there had been provision for considering the circumstances of the case. They pointed out that the incident was costly to the company in the possible loss of a customer, in the dissatisfaction within the employee group, and in the time and money that would be involved in recruiting and training replacements. The Plant Manager could not agree with this point of view. We must have rules if we are to have efficiency; and the rules are no good unless we enforce them.
